Launch of the National Investigation Officers course

Text

The first 8-day course to train National Investigations Officers (NIO) from troop-contributing countries (TCCs) was conducted at the UN Regional Service Centre (RCSE) in Entebbe, Uganda.  The course was designed by the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) with expert support from the U.S. Defense Institute of International Legal Studies.

The course was an intensive program that trained 26 military officers from 11 TCCs on the practice and demands of investigations in peacekeeping. It included operational, legal and technical aspects of investigation with hands-on exercises in interviewing, collection of evidence and organizing cases.  It culminated in a live action field exercise in which teams responded to and executed realistic tasks commonly encountered.  They applied the skills and knowledge acquired during the course and presented their case back to the entire group for assessment by both civilian and military experts.
