Secretary-General meets with troop and police contributing countries on sexual exploitation and abuse

On 17 September 2015, the Secretary-General met with troop and police contributing countries at the United Nations Headquarters in New York as a further means to strengthen cooperation with Member States in combating sexual exploitation and abuse. At the meeting, which was attended by more than 80 representatives from troop and police contributing countries, the Secretary-General outlined a series of new proposals and initiatives, and provided updates on efforts already under way. Measures discussed included expanding vetting military contingents and formed police units for prior misconduct while in the service of a United Nations field mission, establishing a six-month timeline for completing investigations into allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse, including the nationality of uniformed personnel in its reporting on credible allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse, establishing a trust fund to assist victims of sexual exploitation and abuse by United Nations personnel, and suspending reimbursement payments to personnel alleged to have engaged in sexual exploitation and abuse. In their statements made at the meeting, Member States expressed their support for the proposals outlined by the Secretary-General.
